George Marcellino, PhD, passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack on February 10, 2021. Dr. Marcellino was a friend and collaborator with leading physicians, scientists, and engineers around the world. Together they created novel treatments to save vision and advance patient care.

George was a wonderful friend and loyal supporter of Glaucoma Research Foundation and served on our Research Committee. The Marcellino Family suggests that donations in George’s memory be made to Glaucoma Research Foundation. We are grateful for the opportunity to continue George’s interest in research to cure glaucoma.

He was born in Brooklyn, New York, April 28, 1949. He was graduated from City University of New York with a BA, MS, and PhD in Sensory Physiology and Psychophysics. George moved to California in 1978 to pursue what became his passion: solving serious unmet medical needs. In collaboration with physicians and technologists, George led the development of many innovative medical devices particularly in ophthalmology.

George’s creativity resulted in new treatments for major causes of blindness like diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, cataracts, and glaucoma. His expertise as a teacher helped clinicians and industry understand the clinical benefits of these new treatments and increased acceptance of innovative new therapies around the world.

We will all greatly miss George’s leadership and entrepreneurship as well as his warm friendship and open heart. George never retired and was in the midst of several new developments for the treatment of glaucoma at his untimely passing. In his memory we seek to continue his passion for solving medical problems and helping patients worldwide preserve their vision.
