About the Artist

At 53, during a routine eye exam, Mary Kolada Scott was diagnosed with advanced glaucoma, having already lost much of her peripheral vision. Over the years, she has undergone several laser treatments and a trabeculectomy in each eye, which have slowed the disease’s progression. Now 72, Mary continues to maintain her vision through diligent care while pursuing her artistic dreams.

Despite the challenges of living with glaucoma, Mary remains optimistic about advancements in treatment and finds great fulfillment in her art. She specializes in abstract and mixed-media art, showcasing her work in exhibitions across Ventura and Santa Barbara. Her creations often explore themes of resilience and hope, as seen in High Hopes, which expresses boundless optimism, and Vintage Vision, a collage that incorporates a vintage eye chart and images of a blind family friend and her service dog. By looking back and marking progress, Mary believes we can envision and hope for a brighter future.
